Volunteering on Vacation:
Teaching English

Lela & Wilbur Jackson - September, 2007

Here's a summary of the Jacksons' presentation at the September, 2007 meeting of the Travel Club:

For a vacation with real meaning explore http://www.GlobalVolunteers.com. We have participated in 3 experiences with this organization and found it most satisfying. We taught English in Poland, VietNam and China. We were a part of a group of about 15 people with an on site leader. It was well organized and for 3 weeks we spent 5 days each week in various classrooms. The program provided many sightseeing opportunities on the week-ends. The cost is about what you would pay for a tour but it is tax deductible. There are other opportunities for volunteering with this program besides teaching, some being water purification, home building, orphanage care, etc. Check the web site for more detailed information. There is a great need for such volunteers. Their commitment is to go to a country and do what they want done, not to impose our values on them. You will find it an unforgetable experience.
