By special arrangement, at the October, 2006 meeting of the Travel Club, Reference Librarian Rebecca Gabert explained the computer facilities offered by Salem Public Library.
1. Computerized Catalog
A large number of computers are available in the library for library patrons to look up the catalog of books, periodicals and other items in the collections of the Salem Public Library, as well as in the other libraries of the Chemeketa Cooperative Regional Library Service (CCRLS).
2. Reference Databases
A number of databases are accessible by computer for library card holders. These include various directories, research databases, newspapers, historic photo databases, subject-specific databases and other reference databases.
3. Internet
A limited number of computers is available by reservation to library card holders for accessing the Internet for periods limited to 30 minutes or 1 hour. Reservations may be made up to 1 day in advance. One computer may be reserved for a maximum of two sessions in a day. Phone 503-588-6165 for reservations or apply in person at self service reservation stations near the Reference Desk or in the Audio-Visual Center.
4. Word Processing Stations
A limited number of computers equipped for word processing are available on a first-come, first served basis.
5. Wireless Access
If you have a computer or PDA equipped with a wireless card, you can take advantage of high speed (broadband) wireless Internet access within the library. No password is required. (For the technically minded, the Library's wireless network is an 802.11b - not 802.11g - network.)
